Sofia Mayor: Bulgaria's Interior Purchased Socialists Victory in Towns05 November 2007
The informal leader of the self-proclaimed centre-right GERB party and Sofia mayor has accused the Interior Ministry of encouraging rather than fighting vote-buying practices that have allegedly reached unprecedented proportions at these local elections.
"The beefed up police presence in some Bulgarian towns helped the Socialist Party purchase votes for its candidates," Borissov, whose new party scored nationwide gains in the local vote, said at his first press conference after the end of the elections.
"You know my love for the Interior Ministry but this time the number of police officers were too much," Borissov, who first earned plaudits as a crime buster during his stint as a top interior ministry official, said.
